“Dear Emma Clarke, can you sound very very very old? And normal?”

A beloved regular customer sent me a script. “I know you can do this,” he said encouragingly, as if I was about to do a bungee jump down a ravine. “You’ve got to sound old, and I know that’s something you can do well.” There was a pause. “The thing is, you’ve got to sound NORMAL.”

This, reader, was the greater challenge.

To be clear, I am very YOUNG and do NOT sound elderly in my everyday life because, as I say, I am YOUNG. No, my customer was after a character voice. that sounded ‘real world.’ I’ve written elsewhere about the challenges of sounding like a normal person. (Have a read if you fancy it).

I had to sound convincing and not at all like a mickey-taking character. So have a listen.
